although(though) despite

although, despite

 이번에는 although와 despite를 공부해보겠습니다. although와 despite역시 의미상의 차이는 없습니다. 둘 다 ‘비록 ~이지만’라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 단지 although는 접속사, despite는 전치사라는 것만 다릅니다. 역시 간단히 정리해 보면 다음과 같습니다.

접속사 전치사 문장규칙

다시 한 번 말씀드리지만, 접속사 다음에는 주어 동사가 있는 문장이 오고, 전치사 다음에는 ‘명사’가 옵니다.

예문

(1) (Although, Despite) we did our best, we lost the game.

(2) (Although, Despite) our best trial, we lost the game.

두 문장 다, ‘우리가 최선을 다했지만, 경기에 졌다’라는 뜻입니다. 

(1)번을 보면 ( ) 다음에 ‘주어 동사’가 있는 문장이 왔습니다. 그러므로 접속사 although를 써야 합니다. (2)번에서는 ( ) 다음에 ‘our best trial'이른 명사가 왔습니다. 그러므로 전치사를 despite를 써야 합니다.

although, though

although와 though의 차이에 관한 것입니다. 영어를 가르치다보면 자주 받는 질문 중 하나입니다. 

결론부터 말씀드리면 ‘although와 though'의 의미차이는 없다는 것입니다. 

단지 although는 격식을 갖춘 말이나 글에, though는 구어에서 더 자주 쓰인다는 것만 다릅니다. 현대 영어에서는 글에서도 though가 점점 더 자주 등장하는 추세입니다. 그러므로 여러분들께서는 헷갈리면 though라고 알고 계셔도 됩니다.
